Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia, second only to Sydney. If you’re a history buff, Hobart will delight you with its old buildings, such as the Parliament House, the old Hobart Gaol, or even the old General Post Office, where Roald Amundsen sent a telegram in 1912 to confirm that he had returned from the South Pole safely.

Little known fact: The Cadbury chocolate factory in Hobart provides Cadbury’s chocolate to most of the Southern Hemisphere

History of Hobart

If history is not your thing, there is still plenty to see and do in Hobart. Home to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra which is hailed as one of the world’s finest, you can enjoy a program of events that runs throughout the year. If orchestral music is not your thing, then Hobart is also home to the Hobart Fringe Festival, the Hobart Summer Festival, or even Falls Festival, which takes place in Marion Bay on New Year’s Eve.

Hobart also caters to sports and festival fans, with the Sydney to Hobart yacht race taking place on Boxing Day. This marks the start of the Hobart Summer Festival, which is a food and wine festival that runs until half way through January.
